Playing Notes
Guitars 1 and 2 are electro-acoustic guitars, with echo added.
Guitars 3, 4, 5 and 6 are electric guitars.
Guitar 2 is very low is the mix (it disappears in verse 2) and strums
the chords which are used to form the arpeggios played by Guitar 1.
In Solo 1, the powerchord/riff section is split into 2 parts. This can
be played as a single part, but the passage sounds truncated. This is
because the E-note (D-string 2nd fret) is common to the chords and riff
- playing both parts on 1 guitar breaks the sustain of the chords.
The 'Pinched Harmonic' in the riff played by Guitar 4, is subtle. It
is produced by catching the string with the side of the thumb (on the
picking hand) whilst striking it with the plectrum.
In guitar solo 1, the powerchord backing implies the key is Gmajor.
Guitar 5 solos using pentatonic scales. Bars 1 to 4 uses the Eminor
pentatonic scale (relative minor of Gmajor), bar 5 - the Bminor
pentatonic, bar 6 - the Am pentatonic, bars 7 and 8 revert back to
the Em pentatonic scale. Positionally, bar 3 can be a bit difficult,
it is made easier if '5b7' is played with the second finger of the
fret hand. Bar 5 uses 'double-stops' (playing 2 notes on adjacent
strings as a diad pair). Bar 6 is a fast lick - which may take a
while to get the phrasing right.
In the Instrumental section, the part played by Guitar 6+ has been
created by layering a number of overdriven guitars, playing the same
figure. This gives a 'keyboard-like' sound - and allows notes to be
played by merely sliding to the frets, rather than picking them.
Guitar solo 2 is made up of simple lead lines using Bm pentatonic.
