رقصت مع فتاة على أنغام الفالس

لقد كتب ذلك ليتم رقصه في ساحة المعركة
I danced to the song of a voice of a girl
رقصت على أغنية بصوت فتاة
A voice that called, 'Stand till we fall.
صوت ينادي: قف حتى نسقط.
We stand till all the boys fall.'
نحن نقف حتى يسقط جميع الأولاد».
As we danced came the news that the war was not won
وبينما كنا نرقص، جاءت الأخبار بأن الحرب لم تُنتصر
Five armies were coming with carriage and gun.
كانت خمسة جيوش قادمة بعربات وبنادق.
Through the heart of the camp swept the news from the front.
من خلال قلب المخيم اجتاحت الأخبار من الجبهة.
A cloud crossed the moon. A child cried for food.
سحابة عبرت القمر. طفل يبكي من أجل الطعام.
We knew the war could not be won.
كنا نعلم أنه لا يمكن الفوز بالحرب.
So we danced with a rifle to the rhythm of the gun.
لذلك رقصنا بالبندقية على إيقاع البندقية.
In a glade, through the trees, I saw my only one.
في الفسحة، من خلال الأشجار، رأيت الوحيد.
Then the earth seemed to rise, hell hot as the sun.
ثم بدت الأرض وكأنها ترتفع، وكانت ساخنة كالشمس.
The soldiers were dying. There was a tune to the sighing.
كان الجنود يموتون. كان هناك لحن للتنهد.
The song was an old rebel one.
كانت الأغنية أغنية متمردة قديمة.
As the smoke of our hopes rose high from the field,
كما ارتفع دخان آمالنا من الميدان،
My eyes played tricks through the moon and the trees.
لعبت عيناي الحيل عبر القمر والأشجار.
I slept as I dreamed I saw the army rise.
نمت كما حلمت أنني رأيت الجيش يرتفع.
A voice began to call, Stand till you fall
وبدأ صوت ينادي: قف حتى تسقط
The tune was an old rebel one.
كانت النغمة متمردة قديمة.
