His crusade was a search for God and they say
وكانت حملته الصليبية بحثاً عن الله كما يقولون
It's been a long way to carry on
لقد كان طريقا طويلا للمضي قدما
Anybody hear of plague in this town?
هل سمع أحد عن الطاعون في هذه المدينة؟
The town I've left behind was burnt to the ground
المدينة التي تركتها خلفي احترقت وسويت بالأرض
A young girl on a stake, her face framed in flames
فتاة صغيرة على وتد، وجهها مؤطر بالنيران
Cried "I'm not a witch, God knows my name"
صرخت "أنا لست ساحرة، الله يعرف اسمي"
The Knight he watched with fear, he needed to know
الفارس الذي شاهده بخوف، كان بحاجة إلى معرفته
He ran where he might feel God's breath
لقد ركض حيث يمكن أن يشعر بأنفاس الله
And in the misty church he knelt to confess
وفي الكنيسة الضبابية ركع ليعترف
The face within the booth was Mister Death

"This morning I played chess with Death" said the Knight
قال الفارس: "هذا الصباح لعبت الشطرنج مع الموت".
"We played that he might grant me time"
"لقد لعبنا لكي يمنحني الوقت"
"My Bishops and my Knights will shatter his flanks"
"أساقفتي وفرساني سوف يحطمون أجنحته"
"And still I might feel God's heart in mine"
"وما زلت أشعر بقلب الله في داخلي"
And through confession's grille Death's laughter was heard
ومن خلال شباك الاعتراف سُمعت ضحكة الموت
The Knight cried "No - you've cheated me!"
صاح الفارس "لا، لقد خدعتني!"
"But still I'll find a way. We'll meet once again"
"لكنني سأجد طريقة رغم ذلك. سنلتقي مرة أخرى"
"And once again continue to play"
"ومرة أخرى مواصلة اللعب"
They met within the woods, the Knight, his Squire and friends
التقيا داخل الغابة، الفارس، مرافقه وأصدقائه
And Death said "Now the game shall end"
فقال الموت "الآن ستنتهي اللعبة"
The final move was made, the Knight hung his head
تمت الخطوة الأخيرة، علق الفارس رأسه
And said "You've won. I've nothing left to play"
وقال "لقد فزت. لم يتبق لدي شيء ألعبه"
The minstrel, filled with visions, sang to his love
وكان المنشد مملوءًا بالرؤى، وغنى لمحبته
To look against the stormy sky
لننظر إلى السماء العاصفة
The Knight, his Squire and friends, their hands held as one
الفارس ورفاقه وأصدقاؤه، أيديهم متماسكة يدًا واحدة
Solemnly danced towards the dawn
رقصت رسميا نحو الفجر
His hourglass in his hand, his scythe by his side
ساعته الرملية في يده، ومنجله بجانبه
The master Death, he leads them on
سيد الموت، يقودهم
The rain will wash away the tears from their faces
سوف يغسل المطر الدموع من وجوههم
And as the thunder cracked, they were gone.
ومع تصدع الرعد، اختفوا.
