At the door of a rich man's home
على باب منزل رجل ثري
She trembling stood on the marble steps
وقفت وهي ترتجف على الدرجات الرخامية
And leaned on the polished wall
وانحنى على الحائط المصقول
Her clothes were thin and her feet were bare
وكانت ملابسها رقيقة وأقدامها عارية
And the snowflakes covered her head
وغطت رقاقات الثلج رأسها
"Let me come in," she feebly said
قالت بصوت ضعيف: "دعني أدخل".
"Please give me a little bread"
"من فضلك أعطني القليل من الخبز"
As the little girl still trembling stood
بينما كانت الفتاة الصغيرة لا تزال ترتعش واقفة
Before that rich man's door
قبل باب ذلك الرجل الغني
With a frowning face he scornfully said
قال بوجه عابس بازدراء
"No room, no bread for the poor"
"لا مكان ولا خبز للفقراء"
Then the rich man went to his table so fine
ثم ذهب الرجل الغني إلى طاولته بخير
Where he and his family were fed
حيث تم إطعامه هو وعائلته
And the orphan stood in the snow so deep
ووقف اليتيم في الثلج بعمق شديد
As she cried for a piece of bread
كما بكت من أجل قطعة خبز
The rich man slept on his velvet couch
كان الرجل الغني ينام على أريكته المخملية
And he dreamed of his silver and gold
وحلم بما عنده من فضة وذهب
While the orphan lay in a bed of snow
بينما كان اليتيم يرقد على سرير من الثلج
And murmured, "So cold, so cold"
وتمتمت: "بارد جدًا، بارد جدًا"
The hours rolled on through the midnight storm
توالت الساعات خلال عاصفة منتصف الليل
Rolled on like a funeral bell
توالت مثل جرس الجنازة
The sleet came down in a blinding sheet
نزل الصقيع في ورقة المسببة للعمى
And the drifting snow still fell
وما زال الثلج المنجرف يتساقط
When morning came the little girl

Still lay at the rich man's door
