Razor Boy Lyrics
by Steely Dan
Razor Boy - by Steely Dan (Becker/Fagen)
Additions/edits by Howard Wright (Howard (at) jmdl (dot) com)
From the album "Countdown to Ecstasy"
Chord Shapes:
D/F# G Dm7 G(III) B7
Verse 1:
I hear you are singing a song of the past; I see no tears
I know that you know that it may be the last for many years
You'd gamble or give anything to be in with the better half
But how many friends must I have to begin with to make you laugh
Dm7 G(III) Dm7 G(III) Fmaj7
Chorus:
Will you still have a song to sing when
The razor boy comes and takes your fancy things away?
Will you still be singing it on that cold and windy day?
Verse 2:
You know that the coming is so close at hand, you feel all right
I guess only women in cages can stand this kind of night
I guess only women in cages can play down the things they lose
You think no tomorrow will come when you lay down you can't refuse
Dm7 G(III) Dm7 G(III) Fmaj7
(Chorus)
Will you still have a song to sing when
The razor boy comes and takes your fancy things away?
Will you still be singing it on that cold and windy day?
(Solo: 1st half of verse chords)
I guess only women in cages can play down the things they lose
You think no tomorrow will come when you lay down you can't refuse
Dm7 G(III) Dm7 G(III) Fmaj7
(Chorus)
Will you still have a song to sing when
The razor boy comes and takes your fancy things away?
Will you still be singing it on that cold and windy day?
(Ending: F#m E/F# D A)
You can vary the chords a little from the ones given above. For the
interlude (before the chorus) I think Dm7 sounds good, but a straight Dm
is fine too.
Also, a lot of the G and A chords can be played as Gadd9 and Aadd9 chords,
to vary the sound a little. For example, try playing x0242x instead of
x0222x once in a while. (On the original, the piano plays mostly Aadd9
and Gadd9, instead of plain A and G).
